Green-lipped mussel: randomized canine trial

A 2009 paper by Hielm-Björkman and colleagues evaluated a green-lipped mussel preparation in a randomized, double-controlled and double-blinded trial involving 45 dogs with chronic pain and radiographic osteoarthritis. The study compared the GLM preparation with carprofen and placebo.

Glucosamine + chondroitin: randomized multicentre trial

A 2007 study enrolled 35 dogs in a randomized, double-blind, positive-controlled multicentre trial. The tested supplement combined glucosamine hydrochloride with chondroitin sulfate, with carprofen used as the positive control. It should not be cited as evidence for glucosamine alone.

More recent comparative work

A more recent placebo-controlled study in 101 pet dogs compared a green-lipped mussel plus krill oil extract, another supplement, meloxicam and placebo for hip osteoarthritis-associated pain. This is useful evidence for that specific marketed extract combination, not for every GLM powder.

Where does MSM fit?

MSM is widely used in multi-ingredient joint supplements, but the canine clinical evidence base is less established than the studies above. For that reason, this guide explains MSM as part of the formulation without claiming that Canine Vita's MSM dose has independently demonstrated a clinical treatment effect.
